All procedures of modern anesthesia and analgesia.
The Department of Anesthesia is run as a specialist collegiate system and works with the Departments of General and Trauma Surgery of the Jewish Hospital, as well as with the cooperating plastic surgery practice.
One of our focal points is general anesthesia on the basis of modern and safe anesthetic gases or continuously applied intravenous drugs (TIVA) with EEGmonitoring of anesthetic depth.
We also provide all established regional anesthesia procedures: epidural and spinal anesthesia, plexus anesthesia, and peripheral nerve blocks.
Particularly for elderly patients or those with cardiovascular disease we ensure a safe anesthetic with the help of advanced physiologic monitoring according to their clinical picture.
The use of blood transfusions during surgery with potentially significant blood loss is reduced to a minimum employing the techniques of hemodilution, preoperative autologous blood donation, and “cell saving”.
We also treat patients who decline the use of blood transfusions for religious reasons in respecting respect their wishes.
A further main pillar of our department is analgesic therapy.
Perioperative analgesia is applied systematically using patientcontrolled analgesia (PCA) among other methods. The PCA allows patients to control the administration of analgesic depending on their individual pain levels. Alternatively we employ nerve block catheters in the treatment of perioperative pain. The success of pain treatment is monitored in several daily painward rounds making adjustments as appropriate to the patient's needs. In addition to this the Department of Anesthesia provides on call support for issues surrounding pain management.
Finally, our department also treats patients with chronic pain, eg. patients with tumors, and provides advice to the other departments at the hospital.
Emergency Management
The Department of Anesthesia is also engaged in the hospital's emergency management. Yearly training courses in resuscitation procedures are conducted for all employees working directly with patients.
